Should Cartoon Network Give More Shows The Samurai Jack Treatment?

Updated: Feb 11

Following Jack Back?

As the baby here on NOWO, I often find myself missing out on the older references made in podcasts/blog posts as I'm at least 14 years younger than Chris and Mark. However, today I've found a topic that I have actually lived through! Although Cartoon Network was first launched back in 1993, I was born in 1996 and that's when the cartoons started getting good. The first broadcast on Cartoon Network that I remember watching is Dexter's Laboratory in 1996. Of course I didn't watch it when I was first born as all I would have seen was blurred colours, shapes and heard the occasional "DEE-DEE, GET OUT OF MY LABORATORY" (I hope you read that in a Dexter voice). But Dexter's Laboratory was the first released out of many shows I used to watch on Cartoon Network. Dexter's Laboratory was then followed by other shows such as; Johnny Bravo, Cow & Chicken, The Powerpuff Girls, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Codename: Kids Next Door and Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. I grew up watching all of the shows listed here and still now in my 20's will occasionally watch an episode for nostalgia's sake. I actually went a step further and got the Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends house that you see in the title sequence of each episode, tattooed rather large on my thigh, you can take the show off the air but you can't take the show off my body!! ehem... anyway. As many of you must now know, the beloved 2001 Cartoon Network show; Samurai Jack recently got it's 5th season, 12 years after it's 4th season. It was produced by Cartoon Network and aired on Adult Swim, the original showrunner: Genndy Tartakovsky returned once again as executive producer. I won't lie, I didn't watch Samurai Jack when it was originally aired as in 2001 I was 5 and was more preoccupied with all things sugar, spice and everything nice. However, I've heard from other people and read online that it had more mature themes this time around, I'm guessing that's how it ended up on adult swim? So I've had a thought and I know, all of my devoted fans on this site will notice that I've previously made a post on here regarding how I feel about Disney reboots, but hear me out. I think I'd like to see more of my favourite childhood shows getting their own mature revisiting, now I'm not talking about a reboot of the old series like what happened to The Powerpuff Girls last year (read about how I felt about that here) and I don't mean I want to tarnish my old favourite shows with dark themes for example; Ed, Edd n Eddy doing gang related crime around the cul de sac. I mean similar to Samurai Jack and Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra; a series/a season that follows on from the original show with a lot of similar elements but grown up a little for a more mature audience. I'd love to see Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup fighting crime to save the world before bedtime, except the girls won't be in Kindergarten anymore so their bedtime will be like 9/10pm instead of like 6pm. If it's done by the right people, I think this idea could really work! Although, lets leave Courage the Cowardly Dog out of this, as much as I love the show, it scares me enough, there's no need to make it scarier for an older audience... please!

If you enjoyed this piece I did on cartoons, head on over to my main blog; hopeelizablog.wordpress.com as animation is all I seem to be posting about over there! and totally unnecessary but if you did want to see my Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends tattoo, head over to my instagram: @hopeelizab
