13 Life Lessons Kingdom Hearts Has Taught Us
If there's anything that Kingdom Hearts is full of, it's inspirational quotes. That and confusing story lines and big shoes. As it's name would suggest, this Square Enix x Disney cross over game series is full of references to love, friendship and connections with others. If you've played just 1 or even all 10 of the games in this series, you'll already be familiar with all the references I'm talking about.
In this post, I'm going to dissect some of the inspirational quotes from the series and apply them to real world scenarios. Maybe after reading this you'll go away with a new life moto to stick by!
"The heart may be weak. And sometimes it may even give in. But I've learned that deep down, there's a light that never goes out!"
Sora declares this statement in the first Kingdom Hearts game which I read as; after being even in the darkest of times there is always a small ray of light within us that'll help us pull through whatever hard times we are going through. It could also be read as even people who are completely lost in the darkness will always have a small piece of them worth saving. Oh yeah, we plan to get pretty deep in this post.
"My friends are my power"
This quote acts like a motif and actually appears in other quotes throughout this post, it essentially means that the bond Sora shares with others and the friends he has made along his journey have given him the strength to take on anything, including the master of darkness Xehanort himself! This quote is often repeated in moments of weakness or when Sora is backed by other characters, which illustrates his point perfectly!
"All for one, and one for all!"
Straight up stolen from the story of The Three Musketeers, which coincidentally features as a world in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, those 7 words say more than I ever could. Loosely translated it can be understood as "anything gained by one of us is gained by us all and anything tackled by one of us, is tackled by all of us", it doesn't get much simpler than that!
"Even if we’re apart, we’re not alone anymore."
I purposely chose a photo of Kingdom Hearts 3's Gummi Phone as I think it demonstrates how easily the world is connected in the age of the internet and smart technology. This quote reminds us that even in times like these where many of us are spending months apart from family and friends, we're not alone anymore due to the likes of video calls and other forms of digital communication. Speaking strictly in the Kingdom Hearts sense though, what this quote means is that even if you think you're alone, you're never truly alone due to your friends and loved ones always thinking of you.
"Strength of heart can carry you through the hardest of trials"
You know the saying "not for the faint of heart?" well there is no such thing in Kingdom Hearts. There are many characters that this quote can apply to but I think that it applies the most to the Wayfinder Trio Aqua, Terra and Ventus, who go through so much together. When Terra succumbs to darkness, it is really only himself that can get him out of it and the strength of his heart is what prevails in the end. This can indeed be applied to the real world as staying optimistic through a dark situation can sometimes be enough to pull you out the other side.
"If you have a dream, don’t wait. Act."
I guess the main lesson that can be learnt from this quote is don't wait for your dreams to just happen, go out and make them happen! Which is just a long winded and less catchy way of saying "if you have a dream, don't wait. Act". This short quote doesn't require much explanation and can also be applied to the story of Rapunzel in Tangled; who braves leaving the tower she was held captive in for 18 years to pursue her dream. Hence why I chose to feature her in the image!
"You deserve as much as I do to be your own person."
So out of context, this quote is probably a little strange. In the context of Kingdom Hearts though, it can cause quite the impact. In Kingdom Hearts 2, we learn that when Sora became a Heartless in the first Kingdom Hearts game; a Nobody (a person without a heart) was created. Sora's Nobody is Roxas (pictured above) and Roxas basically spends the rest of the series in Sora's shadow. Sora says this quote to Roxas in Dream Drop Distance and for fans who are aware of Roxas' struggle to become his own person, this one hits kinda hard. Like all the quotes on this list though, I can be applied to real life situations if you feel that you are living in someone else's shadow.
"Your light? Never lose sight of it."
I can be hard to motivate yourself sometimes, especially in dark times like we are currently in. It's important to have that thing to strive towards, or something that drives you to do better and to pick yourself up in tough times. I'm not completely sure what that is for Sora but I have a sneaky suspicion that it may be best friend/hinted romantic interest Kairi that motivates Sora to keep going. Final Fantasy VII's Cloud says this quote to Sora in the Olympus Coliseum in the first Kingdom Hearts game, who do you think Cloud's light is?
"I know the Keyblade didn't choose me, and I don't care. I'm proud to be a small part of something bigger—the people it did choose. My friends. They are my power!"
As I said in the intro to this post, a huge part of the Kingdom Hearts series is friendship and Sora's connections to others. This quote is said by Sora in Dream Drop Distance after he is berated by Organisation XIII member Xigbar for not being the Keyblade's chosen one. Not only does this quote remind us just how many people are involved in the series by this point but also reinforces the idea that Sora is only as powerful as he is with the help of his friends by his side. This can definitely be applied to real life as I'm sure many of us wouldn't be where we are today without the help of our loved ones.
"Hearts are made of the people we meet, and how we feel about them— they're what ties us together even when we're apart! They're what...make me strong."
Coincidentally, this quote appears around the same time as the previous one on this list. I chose to include it as well as it again reminds us how far Sora has come since the first instalment of the game. It reminds us of all the character's he's met, world's he's visited and all the connections he's made. It's also a sentimental statement causing us to think about the people we've encountered in our lives and how they've all contributed to make us who we are today. A lot of the quotes here have similar meanings but all of them resonate clearly with a Kingdom Hearts fan!
"It doesn't matter how much we see each other, but how much we think of each other."
If any of you reading this have lost someone dear to you, you'll already know firstly how painful it is not to see them anymore, but also how important it is to keep them in your thoughts. Although Sora, Kairi and Riku are all still around, they do become separated numerous times throughout the series. What keeps them connected though is how often they think of each other, this ultimately always brings them back together in the end and in real life can keep the memory of the person you've lost alive.
"The darkness may destroy my body, but it can’t touch my heart. My heart will stay with my friends. It’ll never die!"
Similar to the last quote in a poetic way, this quote again reminds us that even if someone seems completely lost to the darkness, there is always a small light inside of them. No not in a weird E.T way but in a metaphorical sense. It is also similar to the last quote as it again reinforces the idea that even after we're gone the impression we leave on each other's will stay in their hearts and keep a small part of us alive forever. I didn't think we could get much more soppy but here we are!
"Although my heart may be weak, it’s not alone. It’s grown with each new experience. And it’s found a home with all the friends I’ve made. I’ve become a part of their hearts, just as they’ve become a part of mine. And if they think of me now and then, if they don’t forget me, then our hearts will be one. I don’t need a weapon. My friends are my power!"
I thought we'd finish on this final big quote as it really encompasses every quote on this list. The overall message that can be taken from any/all Kingdom Hearts games is really that we are nothing without our friends. It's our connections with others that allow us to overcome the toughest of trials and to come out the other side of darkness. Even those friends you haven't seen in a long time, if you keep them in your thoughts, they'll always stay a part of you and you of them. Lastly, the main lesson that can be taken from this post is that we are stronger together.
